Class Descriptions

  • Mandarin

Using Young Chinese and Ma Liping Chinese textbooks, students will learn how to read and write simplified Chinese characters, as well as learn the basics of pinyin. We encourage students to discover their love for the Mandarin language through their own exploration, and our mission is to lead them in the direction of proficiency. To do so, this class offers a fun conversational teaching style that keeps kids focused and engaged in class. Our goal is to help the younger generation develop a better understanding of the Chinese language and culture.

  • Chinese Calligraphy

Chinese calligraphy is a stylized artistic way of writing Chinese characters. It is one of the quintessences of Chinese culture and takes adequate practice to get good at. In this class, children will follow samples of Chinese characters using numbered guiding sheets to learn the stroke order and art of Chinese calligraphy.

  • Public Speaking

Students will choose a topic and learn how to go about choosing words for their speech. The class will enable kids to gain confidence in their speaking ability, teach them how to create fluidity with the English language, and give them the opportunity to practice, both with friends and independently. Students will be required to give speeches and/or presentations in front of their classmates and teacher(s).

  • Chinese Writing

This course will introduce students to the process of creative writing in Mandarin. The class will focus on techniques used and how they are used in sample writing. Students will be assigned a topic to discuss and research before being given the opportunity to brainstorm and draft their own creative writing pieces. Students will be required to write regularly and share their writing with the class.

  • Reading Club

Reading enhances a child’s vocabulary and often helps them understand different aspects of life that they have not experienced firsthand. A wide variety of books from the public free library will be reserved each week for students to read. Students may also choose to bring their own books from home. In the club, children are encouraged to explore their imagination and creativity by reading aloud and discussing books they’ve read.

  • Chorus and vocal class

In the chorus, singers will learn to sing traditional Chinese and English folk songs, children's songs and Chinese poems. Students will learn proper vocal techniques and music reading skills, including sight-singing, and other performance skills. Students will have the opportunity to perform at the end of the school year.

  • Math

This class utilizes Singaporean Math textbooks and will teach foundational concepts with in-depth explanations that are highly intuitive and easy to understand. Students will learn these complex concepts via practice worksheets and in-class discussions. The focus of this class is to develop an understanding of mathematical concepts based on logical reasoning.

  • Engineering Lego Club

Children extend their STEM learning at the Lego club with Simple Machines and WeDo 2.0! The hands-on solutions prove a child’s natural desire to want to explore and discover the world on their own. Students will learn subjects like math, science, technology, and engineering effectively while improving and developing skills such as problem-solving, collaboration and communication.

  • Dance

By combining basic ballet elements and creative dance exercises, this class will introduce children to the joy of movement through musicality, creativity, coordination and the social interaction of the dance class. The focus of the class is developing students’ flexibility and understanding of music rhythm. The class will teach students small and short programs that will target correct body alignment and an understanding of basic dancing movements.  The students will also learn a complete group of Chinese dances and will participate in some local performances at Bright Pearl Dance Recitals.

  • Arts Painting

Painting engages and inspires kids to express their imagination, appreciation, and creativity.  The basic techniques of painting and drawing are covered by line, shape, space, scale, and color with pencil, color pencil, crayon, oil pastel, and watercolor. The class has been partnered with Creative Hands Arts Studio, which is an exceptional fine arts program for children in Boston. Projects are individualized for different ages.

  • Arts & Crafts

This is a wonderful class for young artists interested in pursuing their artistic abilities. Students will take on plenty of fun and imaginative craft projects. They will experiment with many different mediums - paint, charcoal, clay, paper, glue, beads, and sparkly jewels. It is a great opportunity to explore different artistic styles and develop artistic techniques — all while having fun!

  • Chess Club

Chess is a classic board game that develops spatial thinking, strategic algorithms, and builds focused concentration. The class is geared for all levels of chess players. Beginners will learn basic game rules and opening tactic moves. Intermediate and advanced players will learn sophisticated strategies and advanced opening moves.

  • Soccer Club

This club focuses on physical skill development and increased accuracy in ball striking during practice and in-game.
